Clicker training is a simple way to get your dog to
respond to your commands. A good way to
begin is with your dog on a lead, get his attention then press the clicker and
immediately follow the sound with a treat. Make sure he connects the sound of the clicker with a food reward. Soon, he will recognize the clicker as
reinforcement that he’s done something good. Use the clicker for recall, sit, stay and other commands. Eventually you can offer treats with the
clicker on an intermediate basis and then discontinue the food reward and
continue the clicker use to reassure him that he’s doing a great job.
The clicker can be worn around the wrist or stored in your
pocket.
Clicker training and his new toy can also be used as a
distraction if your dog displays nervous-aggressive behavior with other
dogs. When the undesired behavior
begins, get between the dogs (if safe), get his attention, the immediately
click and treat! Soon he’ll see other
dogs and think – TREAT!!! To use the
toy method, keep it hidden or out of reach except when other dogs are
around. Before he can become aggressive,
distract him with the toy.
Use your bag to store the delicious liver-flavored treats
on your belt loop. They’re
freeze-dried, so there’s no mess, but your dog will love them! When your pup has graduated from food
rewards, use the case to hold pick up bags for your walks (8 bags included).
Make sure you never tie your dog out on a choke
chain. Try the training without the
choke chain first. You may find you can
skip that step altogether.
Check
with your veterinarian or local Adult Education programs for low-cost obedience
classes in your area. One of the best things you can do to improve your
relationship with your dog and cut down on problem behavior is to make sure he
has plenty of exercise.
